How do I use EquitySim in my class?

The easiest way to use EquitySim is by using one of our “Learning Challenges” templates & syllabus.

A Learning Challenge is a semester-long game where students have fake money to build a diversified portfolio and monitor their sharpe ratio.

Here's a video that showcases the platform in action (click the play button to watch):

Our platform was designed to be easy to use for all backgrounds, we've even seen great success with high-schoolers. We provide tutorials, and virtual walkthroughs to guide the learner. The idea is to remove the need to overlap course content with the challenge.

We recommend allocating a 10% participation grade to the challenge.

Instructor Accounts

As an instructor you have your own type of account. You won't be able about to trade and play the game with this account, it is strictly for administrative purposes.

Here you can set-up a class, and view the performance of your students. You can export data for easy grading.

How do I set up my class?

We've built an instructor dashboard for you to manage your classroom.
If you have not yet signed-up, please go to:

If you've come here from the registration page, follow the guide as you navigate your on-boarding:

STEP 1: Choose a Challenge
When you open your class creation screen, your first task will be to choose which template challenge to use:

The difference between the challenges are the context provided to the students (outlining the competitiveness / difficulty of the challenge), and the ranking criteria.

Introduction to Finance: Creates a low pressure, easy environment where the goal is to learn how to buy and sell securities
Diversification Challenge: Medium pressure environment, where the goal is to build a diversified portfolio
Sharpe Ratio Challenge: Creates the most challenging environment, pushing students to maximize risk / return decisions and their sharpe ratio.
You create your own challenge, write the context and description, and set the rules.

STEP 2: Set course Identifier and Date

The Course ID will be how you reference this challenge in your tabs. If you have multiple sections, use the ID to differentiate them.

The Challenge Date, is how long students will have access to EquitySim. This also determines how much the student pays.

If the duration is 2 months or less, it is $30. Every month on top of this is an additional $12.99.

PART 3: Review Evaluation Criteria

The page breaks down the rules of the game, and how engagement (participation score) is calculated. Students will see the criteria in their learner accounts.

Click the "CUSTOMIZE" button to review the challenge details.

This page has been pre-filled for you to match the Challenge criteria.

These are the tasks the students need to complete to receive 100% participation grade for the semester.

STEP 4: Sending out your customized registration link

Once you’ve reviewed the criteria, click create and your class will be created. You will see a link pop up. This link is very important as its how students join YOUR classroom, and how you can track them all in one place for grading.

Click on the clipboard icon to copy this link. No click the button below, to download your Syllabus integration. You will see a highlighted place to input this custom link.

How does grading work?

After you send out your link, students will start joining and populating your class. You'll be able to see how they are engaging with the simulation.

You'll see multiple ways of evaluating students. For participation we use the "Engagement" score, which tracks if students have completed the tasks we set in Part 3 of the set-up.

Once you have a populated class, it will look something like this:

You can see one of the buttons highlighted here is "export data" in the top right. This allows you to export this student engagement / performance into excel at any time, to make grading easy.

I want to Play too!

You can demo the student experience by signing up with this link (you'll need to use a different email than the one used in your instructor account).

For Instructors the platform is free to use.

The price for the students depends on the course length you set.

There is a base fee of $30, that covers 2 months of usage. Every additional month adds $12.99 to the price of the product.

This covers unlimited trading for students.
